They really helped. If someone is reading this blog and wondering whether to comment, please know that an "I hear you, Katrina," means a lot.

Tzipporah--what does it mean to be an editor in the for-profit world? Do you mean in publishing? I thought there were no jobs there any more, either. Or are you in another industry?katrinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09428267916507575555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052856495751826593.post-39465102607449731712008-12-24T14:56:00.000-05:002008-12-24T14:56:00.000-05:00aaaarrrggghh!OK, that was just me having a flashba...aaaarrrggghh!

OK, that was just me having a flashback to grad school and worrying about all this stuff.

From my current cozy post as an editor in the for-profit world, all I can say is, really? Is it REALLY worth all this, all this struggle, to end up facing a room full of self-entitled, allowance-wielding, keg-drinking college students and try to engage them in something you think is important?

For me, the answer was clearly no.

But I sympathize. And empathize. And really, it's not YOU or your work that sucked, just the job market. And frankly, that's hitting everybody, in or outside of academia.Tzipporahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08807511259582331073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052856495751826593.post-25129334673707038942008-12-22T15:30:00.000-05:002008-12-22T15:30:00.000-05:00Bummer. They have been shitty for so long that it's one of those goes as unsaid things, and yet, right now are shittier than usual.

Your adviser and committee should know this - bet they do - and cannot hold it against you. Even rising stars get gobsmacked by hiring freezes.

but it still sucks.ZMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04469113104449353180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6052856495751826593.post-18829958219062501372008-12-21T17:41:00.000-05:002008-12-21T17:41:00.000-05:00oh, man. And head off for law school.

Can't speak for others, but I never thought any the less of them for it - and I certainly thought better of them for being pragmatic.

But it still sucks.ZMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04469113104449353180noreply@blogger.com
